A Century Beneath the Free State
Harmony Gold is one of South Africa’s oldest and largest gold producers, with a history stretching back to the discovery of gold in the Free State goldfields in the 1940s. Today the company operates a portfolio of deep-level underground mines across the Free State and Gauteng, some of which rank among the deepest and most technically demanding gold mines in the world.
As many of South Africa’s original gold mines have matured, Harmony has built a reputation for extending the productive life of ageing shafts through careful investment, extracting value from ore bodies that other operators might have considered uneconomical, while also developing new projects to replace declining production.

Diversifying Beyond Gold
Beyond its core Free State and Gauteng gold operations, Harmony has been expanding into new growth projects, including copper and gold assets that broaden its commodity base and reduce its reliance on any single ore body or region.
The company has also continued to invest in improving safety performance across its underground operations, recognising that the depth and complexity of its mines demand continuous investment in ventilation, cooling and rock engineering.

As one of South Africa’s largest gold mining employers, Harmony remains deeply embedded in the towns and communities that have grown around its operations, and continues to play a significant role in sustaining employment in the country’s historic goldfields for years to come.
