From Gold Pioneer to Global Miner

Sibanye-Stillwater began as a single South African gold operation spun out of Gold Fields in 2013, and has since grown into one of the world’s largest producers of platinum group metals, alongside significant gold mining operations spanning the Witwatersrand basin. That rapid transformation, achieved through a series of major acquisitions, has made the company one of the most diversified precious metals miners in the world.

In South Africa, Sibanye-Stillwater operates deep-level gold mines in the Free State and West Rand goldfields, as well as extensive platinum group metals operations on the Bushveld Complex, supplying metals used in catalytic converters, electronics and the growing hydrogen economy.

“We didn’t just inherit these operations, we invested in them, modernised them, and built a company capable of competing on a global stage,” says a Sibanye-Stillwater spokesperson. “Our South African assets remain the foundation of everything we do.”

Safety and Sustainability at the Core

Following a period of intense scrutiny over safety in the deep-level gold sector, Sibanye-Stillwater has made safety performance and employee wellbeing a central pillar of its strategy, investing in improved ventilation, cooling and monitoring technology across its underground operations.

The company has also begun diversifying into battery metals and recycling, positioning itself for the global shift toward electric vehicles while continuing to rely on its core South African gold and platinum group metals business for the bulk of its production.

Anchoring Mining Communities

With tens of thousands of employees across its South African operations, Sibanye-Stillwater remains one of the country’s largest mining employers, and continues to invest in the towns and communities that have grown up around its gold and platinum operations for generations.
