Toyota South Africa Motors’ (TSAM) Prospecton plant in Durban is one of the largest vehicle manufacturing facilities on the continent, producing passenger cars and commercial vehicles for local sale and export throughout Africa. The plant supports thousands of direct jobs and a wide network of local component suppliers, making it one of the most significant single contributors to South Africa’s automotive manufacturing sector.
The Prospecton facility manufactures some of Toyota’s best-selling models for the African market, including the Hilux and Fortuner, alongside the Corolla Cross and Quantum minibus, with vehicles rolling off the line for both domestic dealerships and export markets across sub-Saharan Africa.

A Manufacturing Hub for Africa
Beyond the local market, TSAM has positioned Prospecton as an export hub, shipping vehicles manufactured in Durban to more than 40 markets across the African continent. This export focus has helped South Africa’s automotive manufacturing sector remain globally competitive, even as international vehicle markets evolve rapidly.
Toyota has continued to invest heavily in upgrading the Prospecton plant, including modernising production lines and expanding capacity, to keep pace with demand for its most popular models and to support the introduction of new vehicle technologies over time.
Local Content and Supplier Development
TSAM works closely with a broad base of local component manufacturers, supporting South Africa’s automotive component manufacturing industry and contributing meaningfully to local content requirements under government automotive incentive programmes. This has helped sustain thousands of additional manufacturing jobs beyond the Prospecton plant itself.
