Packaging a Continent
Nampak is Africa’s largest diversified packaging manufacturer, producing metal, plastic, glass and paper packaging for the food, beverage and personal care industries. With manufacturing plants across South Africa and operations elsewhere on the continent, the company continues to invest in modernising its facilities to serve some of the country’s biggest consumer brands.
Founded in South Africa in 1968, Nampak has grown over more than five decades into a JSE-listed packaging group whose products touch nearly every corner of daily life in South Africa – from the metal beverage cans used by the country’s major breweries, to the glass bottles used by wineries, to the plastic and paper packaging that lines supermarket shelves.
“Packaging is often invisible to consumers, but it’s a critical link in the manufacturing supply chain,” says a Nampak spokesperson. “Without reliable, high-quality packaging, food and beverage manufacturers simply cannot get their products to market.”
A Diversified Manufacturing Base
Nampak’s South African operations span several packaging categories, including metal beverage cans, glass containers, rigid plastics, flexible packaging and paper-based products such as cartons and tissue. This diversification has allowed the group to serve a broad customer base across the food, beverage, personal care and household goods sectors, reducing its reliance on any single industry.
The company’s metals division, in particular, plays a strategically important role for South Africa’s drinks industry, supplying the aluminium and steel cans used by many of the country’s largest beverage manufacturers. Nampak has continued to invest in high-speed can-making lines to keep pace with growing demand and rising expectations around recyclability.
Sustainability and Local Manufacturing
As global pressure grows for more sustainable packaging solutions, Nampak has placed a strong focus on recyclability and reducing the environmental footprint of its products. Aluminium and glass, both of which are infinitely recyclable, form a significant part of the group’s manufacturing base, and the company has continued to explore ways to increase the recycled content used across its plastic and paper packaging lines too.
Nampak’s manufacturing plants also support thousands of direct and indirect jobs across South Africa, reinforcing the packaging sector’s importance to the country’s broader manufacturing economy and its role in getting locally made goods onto local and export shelves.
Looking Ahead
With South Africa’s food and beverage sector continuing to grow, and increasing demand for sustainable, locally manufactured packaging, Nampak remains well placed to keep supplying the packaging that keeps the country’s consumer goods industry moving.
